La Cala de Mijas

La Cala de Mijas is a charming beachside village located in the Municipality of Mijas in the province of Málaga, Andalusia. It is ideally located right on the beachfront, midway between the larger coastal towns of Fuengirola to the east, and Marbella to the west, and only a 25 minutes’ drive from Malaga airport. Translated, La Cala de Mijas means Mijas Bay. In its original existence it was simply a small typical Andalusian white-washed village reliant on agriculture and home to about thirty fisherman’s cottages lining it´s beach front, a couple of bars, a butcher’s, grocer’s, a small chapel, a school and little else!

Over the years La Cala de Mijas has gradually developed into one of the most popular areas along the coast. Retaining much of its original Spanish character and traditions with the attraction of a wide expanse of blue flag beach, perfect for swimming and a variety of water sports.

There is still a colourful collection of fishing boats moored up on the sand, a reminder that La Cala is still home to a working population, as well as a welcoming place for its visitors with a variety of smart new restaurants, bars and shops.

La Cala de Mijas boasts a cosmopolitan population, with nationalities from across the world joining the friendly Spanish locals. During the year the plaza hosts additional activities from music festivals to small craft markets.
